Performance Art, Theatre, Ceremonial Magick, and the most elemental and primal of musical presentation collide in The Destruct Principle.‘s single “The Ash of Histories“, the first release of a larger concept called The Greater Magick Movement.
While the truest and most complete way to experience The Destruct Principle. is live, it is undeniable that their recorded output creates a scenario and environment in the mind’s eye that is vivid and disturbing. Drawing elements from Elemental Ritual, Native American Spirituality, industrial music and black metal, the song begins with ritualistic, tribal percussion.
Echoes of world music are present, but the percussive elements don’t belong to any nation or culture on Earth. These are rhythms straight from Hell. A chant and a strong synth tone build over drums that grow in size and intensity, and the result is strangely infectious, even catchy. To try and prescribe a genre to this would be fool-hearty. A knee-jerk reaction would be to call this “experimental” but that does it a disservice, in my opinion. The track’s elements are wielded with such purpose and mastery that the wandering a word like “experimental” suggests hardly seems appropriate. In fact, The Destruct Principle. is a good case for why the music world might want to stop throwing that word around so much when it can’t think of another way to describe something.
My mind conjures a very vivid film every time I play this song, but I won’t share what it is because that would ruin what yours might be. I promise you, there will be one because the alchemy between your mind and this piece of music will be completely and totally between the two of you. Rest assured, if you take the journey, on a journey you will go.
