The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus hit the scene hard in the year 2006 with the release of their debut album, Don’t You Fake It. I remember blasting that album in my bedroom at my parents’ house on repeat. A few years later, I saw them live with a band called Tickle Me Pink as their opener. I remember every minute of that night as clear as day. Even though that album, with big hits like “Face Down” and “Your Guardian Angel”, is arguably their most recognized effort, the band has been consistently putting out material for the last fourteen years. Keeping their alternative rock sound with added pop punk flavor, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus has remained a strong presence in the scene, and have kept their loyal fan base through constant touring – it’s clear that they aren’t going anywhere. “Why?” you ask. Because they’re in it for the music.

Enter their new single, “A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Called LA”, from the upcoming EP The Emergency. Even the title tells you that the band is in it for the fun right from the word “Go”. Right off the bat, you hear Ronnie’s instantly recognizable vocals jump right out at you from your speakers, as he shares with us the tale of how he met the lovely woman who would later become his wife. He’s joined by heavy octave guitars and galloping drums as the chorus continues, reflecting on his nervousness in that situation.

The verses take things down a level as he continues to recall that first night, the drums accenting a rhythmic vocal performance as the guitar plays a light, catchy pop punk riff. As we draw nearer to another chorus, the guitars explode back into play while Ronnie reveals his insecurities in that situation, something we’ve all felt in those moments. To me, this makes it much more relatable than your run of the mill “boy meets girl” song.

Rather the close on a chorus like many songs do, the band takes a different approach, ending on a bridge with that familiar Red Jumpsuit feel, punctuated with moments upbeat pop punk goodness. Here he talks about how he asked her to marry him, detailing his feelings for her and how much she changed his life. Very sweet, and a happy ending to a good story.

Overall, “Once Upon A Time In A Galaxy Called LA” is a catchy, fun song that’s sure to make you think of the person you love. The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus captures the act of courtship and the feelings that come with it in an accurate and relatable way, and prove that they never lost their style while doing so. This song resonates especially with this writer, seeing as I proposed to my now fiancee at a Red Jumpsuit Apparatus show where my band was opening, so in a way, they helped me start my own love story (thanks guys!)

The single will be released to all major streaming services on January 31st, 2020. Be sure to check it out the single as well as the tour dates to get your chance to see them live!!
