Yes, you read that right. Just when you thought 2020 had given us enough surprises we’re now getting a new Nickleback cover of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” on the heels of Korn‘s own version of the same song. Seems this song about Johnny and the Devil is having it’s hay day and to be honest, I couldn’t tell you which is better but I can tell you that their two styles seem to have traded places in surprisingly good ways.
We’re seeing two very different versions of the same cover displaying two various aspects of the bands we don’t often see and it’s like The Devil and Johnny are at it again! Maybe it was a happy accident but these two bands couldn’t have planned it any better because this has turned what would have been two good releases by themselves into a modern day ‘duel’, making them a ripple and not just a splash. Check both versions out for yourself below, follow the links to subscribe, and let us know what you think of them. As for me, I’m going to go grab a whiskey and wrap my brain around the need to write about Korn and Nickleback in the same article….
Nickleback’s release went out yesterday, August 14 2020 and it brings the riffs and the…. hard rock and metal?? I don’t know that I’ve ever heard Chad Kroeger sound quite so hard core! The use of a demonic voice for the Devil is a nice little touch in their official animated release on their Youtube channel.
Korn’s release was July 28th 2020 on their Bandcamp platform and is simplistic with an edge, featuring harmonious almost heavenly backing vocals but staying more true to the country tones of the original track. This is a different route from their usual music but displays a bare bones type talent that rings through.
