Coming out of Philadelphia, Pa is a very cool and funky vibe of Holy Smoke, recent visitors to our lovely city for the Steel City Showcase. A five piece heavy, psychedelic groove rock band formed in early formed in 2015, it’s members are David McNally (Vocalist/Lyrics), Brian Schmidt (Guitar), Justin Ulrich (Guitar), Aaron Morgan (Drums/Precussion), and Mike Forte (Bass). Not only do these guys put on a high energy performance on the stage, their five track release “Pipe Dream” is incredible!

“Pipe Dream” is pretty much what you expect and need from a band whose vocalist can be found in hippie skirts and bare feet, a real turning back of the page to a time of peace, love and happiness with a funky and heavy feel.

“Rinse and Repeat” is made up of cool rhythmic sounds and transitions to a heavier rock feel while keeping the softer tones and smooth vocals, not an easy thing to do.

“Blue Dreams” brings you hypnotic beats and psychedelic guitar sounds. Paired with strong vocals they bring you back and forth between a dream like quality and some heavier vibes. While listening I got the feeling I was really surfing a half pipe rather than music.

“Missing the Mark” has a really smooth guitar intro and seemingly sporadic drum beats on intro and regulates itself to a meditative background of sound until the end where it lifts you up into a much less mellow feel.

“Golden Retriever” is the most fun song on the CD. Listen carefully to the lyrics and enjoy a different blend of music than the other songs, almost an old country rock vibe. This one is gonna make you smile.

“Asch Backwards” is a funky, electronic twang type of song. We’re back to a different side of the 70’s, which is pretty much where we started this journey. It’s got an almost simplistic feeling that makes this stick in your head before totally jamming out on you!!

“Pipe Dream” can be found on Bandcamp, http://holysmokephilly.bandcamp.com and since

Holy Smoke will be coming back soon enough to Pittsburgh so check them out on Facebook so you know when – or take a road trip! https://www.facebook.com/pg/holysmokephilly. Don’t forget to hit that like button while you check them out and let the guys know you appreciate their stuff!!

FAM is a Pittsburgh, PA based music media company that’s all about the personal, emotional and social experience of music. The internet is awesome for finding music – living it is better! We’re bringing you professional photos from shows, articles, videos and more to remind you that your weekend doesn’t have to be spent here in the virtual world but with people who have at least one thing in common with you – a shared taste for music. Music media has been done before, but we flipped the script and concentrate on the stuff you haven’t seen yet – the local and regional bands that aren’t just a name on a billboard and a face on a stage. You’re probably still going to find some national level stuff happening around the Pittsburgh area but that’s because when they come to town, they’re part of our family… and once upon a time they were a local band from somewhere.
