I’m not going to lie; I was never much of a ska person before. It was in my peripheral vision, but I never got up close and personal with it. At least I didn’t until the loveable crew of the Sneaky Heat Missiles snuck their way into my ears, and into my heart. Their sound is upbeat, intense, and horn-ey (horns joke) as all hell. They deliver a fun twist on a classic ska sound that creates a unique and exciting auditory experience.
Their latest EP, titled Illusions of Sonic Brilliance, is some of their best work to date. This 6/7-ish song release will have your skankin’ from beginning to end.
My favorite song on the EP is undoubtedly track 3, “Fat Wallets and Empty Hearts”. The in-your-face lyrics, accompanied by the groovy guitar and boppin’ brass will almost undoubtedly leave you shaking your ass. It’s an absolute anthem, and very scream-along-able for those long car rides (or bus rides when you don’t care for the people around you).
A very close second place, rolling in at track 5, is the absolute delight that is “Poker with Joe”. The song is so fun and dance-y, then guitar the breakdown in the chorus rocks so hard and gets so nasty. I just wanna kick my feet and punch someone! I think it’s worth noting that the gang vocals really take the experience to the next level. Everyone singing sounds very attractive as well, in my unbiased opinion.
Truly, every song is a banger. This EP hits hard and sounds great. I truly had a ding-dong dandy time with this, and it’s already on my daily rotation.
Illusions of Sonic Brilliance by The Sneaky Heat Missiles hits the streets on October 1st. Make sure you check it aht, cause you’re gonna dig it. ALSO – do not snooze on seeing these guys live. As good as they are coming out of the noise box, they’re even better in person. I’d say they’re easily the 2nd Best Punk Band in Pittsburgh.
