“Fallen Angel” by Mass of Man (featuring Mack Harrison), is a dark, brooding but ultra realistic look into the trickery and sometimes life ending truth behind depression. Setting the stage, Depression/Mack and its victim/Mass of Man sit across from each other, having the conversation out loud that so many of us have internally. Depression makes no bones about how it wants this conversation to end… literally. Telling its lies, mocking the life of its victim you begin to see Mass of Man take the words to heart. Apparently he was on top of the world when this video started, being called unstoppable by Depression, only to start giving in to the lies and mental gymnastics of his own darkness.
Mass of Man is a rap artist from Rhode Island seemingly known for not only his music, but his mental health advocacy. I was introduced to his music by the YouTube algorithm and was hit pretty hard by this song. Having battled treatment resistant Bipolar Depression for most of my life, I know how real this fictional conversation is. If you’re fighting this battle, call the suicide prevention hotline by dialing 988, find meds that help, get therapy, what ever you have to do, keep fighting and tell Depression to fuck off. Keep living, if only to spite that dark voice in your head. Don’t take away the option for change in your life by ending it.
