Tonight was a prog rock/metal feast for the brain, Leprous and The Dear Hunter tickling the ample crowd’s intellects for main-eventers Between the Buried and Me, who are an equation brought to life by technology, the theoretical made real through a combination of machine and soul. Many in attendance were obviously at Mr. Smalls to catch the aforementioned two acts.  While both bands performed admirably, the music made by each failed to grab...

A flute from Troy Donockley wistfully opened this lengthy set commemorating two decades plus of female-led symphonic power metal’s breakthrough band, Nightwish. Amazonian singer Floor Jansen effectively exorcised the ghosts of frontwomen past with her remarkable pipes and authoritative yet cordial and almost playful stage presence, her seraphic vocals at times dueling with Marco Hietala’s sinister stylings. Emppu Vuorinen and Tuomas Holopainen had their own Blackmore/Carey/Malmsteen/Johanssen-style fight to the finish as arpeggios raced, keys sparkled,...

I wasn’t always a Hatebreed  fan. That this was my fifth time seeing them is something I can’t entirely wrap my head around. I’d dismissed them for roughly a dozen years until I caught them headlining the second stage at Ozzfest 2007, the festive, upbeat vibe and unbelievable camaraderie forever made an impression on me. One doesn’t discuss technicality when Hatebreed comes to mind, and this Mr. Smalls stand was no exception. Hatebreed are for...

Coming out of Pittsburgh, PA, 9 Stitch Method is a Progressive Alternative Metal band that recently released their album “Life After You”, a full twelve tracks of metal that finds the line between the divide of growls and actually understanding the lyrics, giving it a full sound that anyone who loves headbanging music will want to own.       It’s good. It’s aggressive. It’s METAL. The end.       On second thought, let’s go a little deeper....

Tonight’s metal extravaganza in Youngstown was a celebration of legacies, a chance for bands to ply their craft in front of sizeable US crowds as they did in the Golden Age of arenas. First up was the problematic, complicated, and controversial Black Star Riders, a band that some may feel don’t have a right to exist. Being an ardent Thin Lizzy fan, I feel they carry on that torch pretty admirably, Ricky Warwick channeling Phil...

The Crowning comes to us out of Stroudsburg, P.A., with a sound that crosses Rock genres. A level of professionalism in all that they do, combined with the major talent of each member, is quickly making fans for them everywhere they reach with good reason. When Micah Martin first sent me the unreleased copy of their single “Stay” I knew by the third chord that I needed to stop everything I was doing and listen...

FAM is a Pittsburgh, PA based music media company that’s all about the personal, emotional and social experience of music. The internet is awesome for finding music – living it is better! We’re bringing you professional photos from shows, articles, videos and more to remind you that your weekend doesn’t have to be spent here in the virtual world but with people who have at least one thing in common with you – a shared taste for music. Music media has been done before, but we flipped the script and concentrate on the stuff you haven’t seen yet – the local and regional bands that aren’t just a name on a billboard and a face on a stage. You’re probably still going to find some national level stuff happening around the Pittsburgh area but that’s because when they come to town, they’re part of our family… and once upon a time they were a local band from somewhere.
